Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting and Net Zero Advisory

Triple Bottom Line Accounting has produced a new step-by-step guide to help accountants worldwide incorporate Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting and Net Zero Advisory into their services.

Forward-looking accountancy practices offer their clients Greenhouse Gas (GHG) Accounting and Net Zero Advisory, supporting businesses to transition to the new sustainable economy. This article in the Association of International Accountants (AIA)s International Accountant Magazine was researched and written by TBLA Ltd directors Fran Ellington and Dr Peter Ellington. It is a guide on introducing greenhouse gas accounting and net zero advisory into an accountancy practice.

Peter writes that accounting for greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions is like accounting for costs. It starts with estimating total GHG emissions for a business split into categories. From this categorisation, conversion factors (aligned with the Greenhouse Gas Protocol) are used to identify the causes and amounts of the emissions. Once identified, options for reducing GHG emissions are evaluated. This leads to an agreed GHG emission reduction plan that can be managed going forward.

Fran has been working with TBLA clients and Colbea clients in Essex over the last two years, helping them calculate their emissions and set targets for reducing their scope 1, 2 and 3 greenhouse gas emissions. She says that using science-based targets will force the supply chain to decarbonise and accelerate the global net zero emissions target. She has produced a table comparing carbon trackers accessible to accountants in different areas of the world. Fran works alongside Alasdair Wilcock of Maple Cone to help small businesses decarbonise and devise actionable sustainability plans and policies.
